At NDUEC, our goal is to deliver life-changing educational experiences that positively impact personal wellbeing. Our ongoing efforts to fulfill this mission have resulted in numerous achievements worth celebrating.
We recently launched a Sewing Corner in response to numerous students’ requests as an addition to our enrichment programs. Sewing is not only a fun hobby, but it also has a positive impact on one’s character development and mental growth. In addition to learning how to sew a button or create a unique gift, sewing is a valuable life skill that proves useful time and time again. Since the inception of the Sewing Corner, we have observed improvements in fine motor skills and the ability to follow instructions. Moreover, we have noticed an increase in imagination and creativity.
On the southeast corner of our property, we have a Free Little Library installed, which is a result of our partnership with Queen City Book Bank. The initiative aims to provide access to books in more locations, particularly for those who cannot visit library branches. MaryKay Connelly, the Director of Covington’s Early Literacy Initiative, has played a significant role in launching this project.
Our student library has undergone improvements, and we encourage our students to borrow books whenever possible. Thanks to Cincinnati Book Bus, our shelves now boast over $1,000 worth of new books, which has expanded our range of materials. However, we understand that having a diverse collection is only the first step. By continually updating our library, we provide our students with more opportunities to develop their minds beyond academic achievements. Our ultimate goal is to foster a love of reading that translates into sharing books, exchanging thoughts and ideas, amplifying voices, and promoting conversation within the community, beyond the confines of our center.
Ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff is of utmost importance to us. We have taken measures to install an automated external defibrillator (AED) on our premises, which can be used to assist individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest. Thanks to the generosity of Cameron’s Cause, we now have access to a sophisticated and user-friendly device. Additionally, Dr. Ryan Woods, a St. Elizabeth Physician, provided comprehensive training to our staff on the proper utilization of the AED.
It’s rare to stumble across a lush area among the concrete blocks of Covington, but we have successfully improved the quality of outdoor greenspace by creating a STEM Garden. This environmental project serves as an avenue toward enhancing eco-literacy, where students learn about food security, nutrition, and sustainability. Thanks to an environmental beautification grant, we installed an irrigation system. As a result, our outdoor space has flourished, allowing us to focus on relevant teaching opportunities.
In addition to outdoor improvements, we’ve been busy making interior upgrades. For example, we recently converted one hundred 4′ fluorescent lighting fixtures to LED ballast bypass lamps throughout the building. The significant benefit of installing LED lights in classroom settings is the improved academic performance of students. Studies indicate it creates a more effective learning environment, improves test scores, enhances learning, and increases overall student productivity. But that is only part of the project outcome. We also anticipate decreased energy bills and are pleased to promote a technology that can help safeguard our future.
We look forward to raising the bar as we celebrate our accomplishments. Thanks to a generous gift from a local family foundation, we purchased a 12-passenger Ford Transit van in February 2022. After more than a year of patience, the van is off the production line. Beginning in September, we will provide transportation for students who need it most, thrusting our mission forward.
